Mondays - Fridays 6 AM to 12 PM
Mornings with George Knight is a morning show that’s different than other morning shows. Sure, we give you the things you need to start your day, like news, weather forecasts, traffic updates, and LOTS of music. But, what sets us apart is that, on THIS show, music reigns supreme. George may be the host, but his job is to add value to the music that he plays for you. It’s a morning show for TRUE music lovers.
George now hosts the show from his remote basement studio just outside of Boston, which works out well – except when someone in his family feels the need to do laundry in the morning...
Supplying news updates on Mornings with George Knight is a rotating crew of very talented Emerson students. They bring a lot of talent to the table, and are an important part of the show. George - whose first full time job on Boston radio was as a newsperson on a morning show - serves as a mentor, and offers guidance on story selection, newswriting, and delivery. Since the show started, almost every news team member has gone on to work in radio or TV, with some landing jobs right here in Boston (Torii Bedford/Reporter for WGBH, Madison Rogers/Reporter and Anchor for WBZ).
Meet George and the News Crew:
George Knight is a Boston native who, in addition to hosting the morning show alongside Emerson students, also serves as a mentor and coach for on-air work, news writing, and audio production at WERS. He is an accomplished musician who can be heard at various places around Boston thumping on his funky bass.
Leah Jablo is doing her news remotely from Chicago.
Leah's make-shift "on-air booth" is in her family living room in her home in Chicago. She gets the space to herself in the early morning when her family is all still asleep (Chicago is on central time, an hour behind Boston!) Luckily, she had audio equipment lying around the house before the pandemic hit, as her family dabbles in amateur music recording.
Leah joined the 88.9 team because she’s a lover of good music, just like the rest of the WERS staff. She comes from a family of musicians and is a violinist and a lover of singing herself. Some of her favorite musicians are David Bowie, The Shins, and Stevie Wonder. Leah loves her WERS family in Boston and is glad she can do her job remotely from Chicago, Zooming in for the morning news!
Nicole Poitras is doing news remotely from New Hampshire.
I converted my closet into a little studio! To further deaden the sound, I laid a blanket on the hardwood floor and also hung a blanket on the curtain rod of the window. I made a little seat for myself out of a throw pillow and a husband pillow so that I'm comfy. My microphone sits on a small plastic shelf so that it's the right distance away from me, keeping the sound clear and at a steady volume (you can see some of my socks in one of the drawers, haha!). When I'm recording, I put the lid of a storage bin on my lap and put my laptop on that to keep the computer from getting too warm. Doing the morning news in this way has been a unique and fun challenge!
