WERS 88.9 fm - Artist Interview: The Virgins
February 10, 2009
The Virgins, a band from New York City, had quite a successful year in 2008. They released their debut self-titled album in June, and its first single, “Rich Girls,” was MySpace’s “Single of the Week” when it first came out. It was also on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Songs of 2008 list. They were put on Alternative Press’ “100 Bands You Need to Know.” Needless to say, last year treated them well.
The year before that wasn’t too bad for the band either. Their songs were used on an episode of Gossip Girl, and lead singer Donald Cummings says that in addition to other goals he has for the band, he anticipates a second appearance on the show. “We’re trying to get us on Gossip Girl,” he says, “That’s what I want.” The Virgins’ music has also been featured on 90210, Entourage, and Dirty Sexy Money.
The Virgins sold out their first Boston headlining show on Saturday at Great Scott, although this wasn’t the band’s first time in Boston. They have previously supported Be Your Own Pet, Ra Ra Riot, and Black Kids.
Cummings and bassist Nick Zarin stopped by WERS to play a few songs for an acoustic set.
Even though this doesn’t seem typical, given the band’s very dance-oriented music, the acoustic set isn’t really much of a stretch. Cummings writes songs on an acoustic guitar. He makes them into more energetic songs because he wants to hear them played loudly. He usually tests songs at parties and clubs and makes changes (if need be) on the spot.
They opened up the live mix with their first single, “Rich Girls.” Even though the song seemed to be quite energetic, the acoustic guitar brought nuance to the acoustic version. Both versions of the song were quite enjoyable and able to accommodate any mood.
The next song was “One Week of Danger," which brought out something in Cumming’s voice somewhat reminiscent of The Strokes' Julian Casablancas.
Cumming and Zarin closed their set with “Private Affair.” This song was mellower than the other songs, but it was still fun. I noticed as each song passed, that more people were getting into the music. People were tapping their feet and hitting their legs to the beat.
The Virgins will begin their European tour on March 27 and it will continue on until April 26. They have many dates in the United Kingdom. “It’ll have just come out when we get there,” says Zarin. “The shows we have played where we headlined in London have been great. Hopefully the rest of the country will follow suit.”
After the European tour, we can only guess what they have planned. “Expect the unexpected,” says Cummings.
