WERS station Manager, Jack Casey; Operations Manager, Howard D. Simpson; and a plethora of Emerson alumni were proud to induct the second class of WERS Hall of Fame. Elroy “R.C.” Smith (class of ’81), Howard M. Liberman (class of ’68), and Charles E. “Ted” Phillips have been added to the WERS Hall of Fame, in honor of their relentless efforts to make WERS the number one college-run radio station in the country.

Unfortunately Ted Phillips has  passed away, but his son, Ted Phillips Jr., accepted the award on his father’s behalf, telling stories of growing up around Emerson, and the significance of WERS to his father.

Howard Liberman, who currently provides WERS with pro-bono FCC legal counsel, took to the podium with legal documents from his days as a freshman at Emerson, making jokes and providing anecdotes about his time with the station.

Elroy Smith, accompanied by an array of family and friends, accepted his award by thanking god and regaled the audience with an inspirational tail of his childhood in Bermuda—where he battled illiteracy before attending Emerson College, which he credits for his current position as a star in the radio industry.

Following the reception, Smith, Liberman, Phillips Jr. and Casey posed for photographs with their awards. These alumni are just a fraction of graduates who have utilized the skills learned here at WERS in order to reach the top of their professional fields. Other WERS alumni looked on as peers accepted awards, and in years to come, the pool of talent WERS has helped cultivate will surely offer plenty of fodder for future Hall of Famers.
