Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix- WERS August Album of the Month
- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (the band’s 5th studio album) debuted at #37 on the Billboard 200
- Phoenix was originally the backing band for the French electronic group Air
- The band wrote the breakout song from the album “1901” in a matter of 10 minutes, however it took them a year to finish recording the track
- Songs from this album have been featured on popular shows on both MTV and the CW
Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest- WERS May Album of the Month
- The album is named for a small island off the coast of Massachusetts
- Band got its start in 2003 when singer/guitarist Ed Droste wrote 35 songs in his Brooklyn bedroom over a 15-month period. Their drummer Chris Bear and then Daniel Rosen and Chris Taylor later joined in 2004
- The New Yorker calls Veckatimest “a sprawling water park, sending you through different sluices and dropping you from pools down onto small lakes”
Blitzen Trapper – Black River Killer- Portland, Oregon-based band characterized by 60s-esque “experimental folk rock”
- Signed to Sub Pop Records (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, The Shins)
- Blitzen Trapper’s last album, Furr, was ranked #13 on Rolling Stone’s Best Albums of 200
Mason Jennings – Blood of Man- In early 2008 Jennings was signed to Brushfire Records (Jack Johnson). Jennings and Johnson began touring together shortly after
- Recorded all of the instruments on the album himself
- Says he drew most of influences for Blood of Man on his own “childhood experiences”
- The iTunes proceeds from sales of the single, “Sunlight”, went to the Surfrider Foundation in efforts to clean up beaches around the country
Wilco – Wilco (The Album)- This album differs from their last, because it "allow[ed] [themselves] a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument"
- Includes the first Wilco duet to appear on an album: “You and I” with singer, Feist
- Appeared and performed on The Colbert Report to support President Barack Obama in the 2008 election
- The single, “You Never Know” reached the #1 spot on the AAA chart, which was their first #1 within the past twelve years
Sondre Lerche – Heartbeat Radio- Norwegian singer/songwriter and guitarist
- Composed the musical score for the motion picture, Dan In Real Life
- Spin Magazine gives the album 4/5 stars, praising his “Gentlemanly melodies [which] glide across elegant guitars” accompanied with “swelling string arrangements”
